UNIMAS New Hall, DeTAR Putra

When I first registered as a Unimas undergraduate student, we were told during our orientation week that we will get to use the new Dewan Unimas for our graduation ceremony once it is ready. That was in 2002. We were waiting and waiting for the new hall to be completed but unfortunately that did not happen. When we had our graduation walk in 2005, we still use the old hall. Not to say that it was not a good hall, it was meant to be temporary. I believe the same script was also used for our juniors - during their orientation week. :)

9 years later, in 2011, we finally have the hall completed and ready for use. It is called Dewan Tunku Abdul Rahman Putera, hence the short DeTAR Putra. However, during the last convocation ceremony, I missed the opportunity to be there with everyone else because coincidently I had my GRE and TOEFL test in KL.

On Wednesday, I finally set foot in the much talked and raved about hall for our VC's annual speech. I felt proud of the hall, and proud of Unimas as a whole. We have travelled a long way since the old campus days, haven't we? This year will mark the 20th Anniversary of Unimas (1992-2012).

Ada dua tingkat, kalau yang kat bawah penuh, boleh duduk di tingkat atas tu. Oh juga ada screen yang HD .

Damai Puri 2

Our dinner was held by the poolside / beach. It was a great decision to have it there instead of the normal practice of doing it in a ballroom. The set up was much nicer than I expected.

Our department was the first to do department performance and we did Fashion Show! This was half of us getting ready and the other half of the department members were on the other side of the stage.

My partner was Mr. Heng. We tried to dance but failed miserable.

Oh man! Dr. Sopian was hilarious!

I was chatting with Ezain when the emcee called out my name to receive an award. I was confused but walked to the stage nonetheless.

The next morning, after breakfast we did not stay to join Sukaneka since Ezain had to catch his plane. Duduk lepak kat Starbucks at Kuching Airport while waiting for his boarding time.

Sad face knowing I will be alone again.

OK lah, we had a great time at Damai Puri.
Mana tidak great kan, company bayar.... haha.

Damai Puri

Our faculty had a retreat at Damai Puri, Santubong, Kuching yesterday and it ended this morning. For this occasion, we are allowed to bring our family members as it is an annual event cum family day of the faculty. Ezain came all the way from Miri :) Thank you, Sayang for being here. I appreciate it so much.

On Friday night after picking Ezain from the airport we went to watch the movie Safe House. If you like Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds the hot actors, I strongly recommend this action movie. Both Ezain and I enjoy watching action movie so we will not miss this. Had dinner at Kenny Roger's prior to watching Ryan.

Straight from his office, hop on the plane and meet me one hour later. This becomes a routine for Ezain.

If you look at my picture above, you notice that my lips are pale, with a hint of pink gloss. For our Back to 60s themed dinner, I thought of wearing Russian Red MAC lipstick just for fun. So I searched for 6 empty MAC cases for me to exchange with a new lipstick. While waiting for our order to arrive, I made a quick escape to MAC counter and got my Russian Red!

No wonder I love nude lipstick so much! I look like a tranny with red ones!

Takpe, takpe. Tranny pun tranny lah. Janji kita ikut tema. Baru lah sporting kan.

Our movie started at 10.40 p.m., when the movie ended we reached home at about half past midnight. Poret poret chit chat pukul 1 lebih pagi baru nak tidur. I made a plan with Victoria on Friday to meet up at a coffee shop for a quick breakfast before we begin our journey to Santubong.

Of course when you sleep at 1 a.m. there is a fat chance of getting up at 6 a.m. kan? I woke up at 7 ! Grab my phone and Whatsapp to Vic. Sorry, Vic I think we have to forget about our breakfast plan as I just woke up.

Once we arrived, terus check in, and I went to join the rest of the faculty member for a brainstorming session. Let us have a look at Damai Puri. I must say that it is quite a lovely place.

I ~~am a cheapskate~~ decided to wear whatever dress that I already have in my closet. So I reused the purple dress that I bought for Melissa's wedding. The polka-dot scarf is actually from a handbag that I bought and used for less than a week when its strap came off. HAHAHAHHA giler cheapskate!

Brunei Trip

I just got back from Miri, it has been one fantastic weekend. Banyak makan and jalan jalan. The highlight of my weekend in Miri would be our sweet and short day trip to Brunei on Saturday.

OK lah, I am pretty tired now. Letih sangat sebab we were on the road most of the time. Kita tengok gambar je k.

Pusing-pusing di Jerudong Park, nampak banyak kuda. So excited nak ambil gambar, terus wind down the window.. terus busukkkkk!

We shared our food, nak diet kan. Konon. Sila refer gambar gelato di atas.

We watched The Grey. Aiyooo really good movie, the leading man is one of my favorite, Liam Neeson. Tapi harus lah cerita nya sangat depressing. Terus down sepanjang trip sebab teringat-ingat cerita ini.

The cineplex at The Mall, Gadong. I must say this is the cleanest, and comfy cineplex I have ever been to. I must say, the main reason this trip was made was because we wanted to try out the cineplex in Brunei since we heard a lot of good reviews. Memang betol la, best.

Our next destination was the Brunei Museum. Sadly we can't take pictures inside the gallery.

He who insisted on making faces whenever I bring my camera out. OK, this place is called Escapade Sushi restaurant. There are a few outlets in Brunei, but the one that we went to was located at Kuala Belait, on our way back to Miri. Mirians, if you are bored with Sushi King, (eh ada ke kat Miri? I tak ingat) you may want to take that 1 hour trip to Kuala Belait for this experience. Syiok betul.

The portion is big, we struggled to finish this. That white thingy are thick layers of cheese. Serious muak.

This beauty is called "Hana Smoked Salmon". Harus saya order satu.

Bowling competition and hair treatment

Our faculty host a bowling competition yesterday. I tried to remember the last time I set foot at a bowling alley, I think it was years ago at Rochester. Itu pun memalukan diri sahaja sebab main macam orang baru pernah pegang bola (memang baru pernah pun) so I always find excuses not to join or volunteer myself at any competition yang ada sangkut paut with bowling . You see, my intention is pure, I just don't want to let the rest of the team to feel down and sad because of my poor performance. Macam tak best la kan kalau diaorang strike and spare tapi kau, masuk longkang jer memanjang.

But this time, I cannot escape dah. Terpaksa jugak I pergi. Dah abis alasan I bagi. And fortunately, group I sporting giler. Kak Wati and Kak Roslina sangat la pandai ambik hati. Dan paling penting they keep on telling me that we are playing for fun, tak payah laa stress. Oh Mr. Philip pun sporting giler OK. Siap ajar macam mana nak pegang bola dengan betul. Hehe.

Cat eye practice warning : me without make up

Our faculty will be having a 60's-theme dinner on 11th February 2012. So I googled for 60's makeup ideas - cat eye wing and false lashes are must-haves to create that 60's look. So while waiting for AJL to start, I did a little hands-on practice. I won't be using any MUA touch for the dinner since nanti kita orang nun ha, tercampak kat Damai ke Santubong, which is easily 1 hour away from Kuching city center. Lagipun we are having some brainstorming session in the morning so we won't have time to go to Kuching to get my makeup done and return for the dinner. DIY sudehhh.

Ni aku nak cerita.

Pagi-pagi aku dah emo. Dah lah aku tengah period. Lepas tu aku tengah pening buat SKT sebab performance appraisal akan dijalankan next Monday. Suddenly came two students to my office. Which was fine. They wanted to ask something about practical training. While talking, I noticed that either of them OR both have a serious BO problem. Satu ofis aku bau ketiak yang macam bau mi goreng tu tau. Alahai, OK aku diam jer, layan borak. Lepas tu, when they both got the information that they wanted, as they were leaving, one of them stood at my door, turned to me and said "Madam, you do not look nice with that pale lipstick".

Eh? I just smiled.

Hey, first of all, I am not your friend. Second, I LOVE PALE LIPSTICK. Third, before you open your mouth to comment about my pale MAC lipstick, get yourself some deodorant. MALU OK. Anak dara berbau ketiak! Aku tak cakap apa apa pun pasal bau badan kau. But then again, I don't blame you. Looking at you , I know you only think lipsticks come in one color - RED.

I apologize if the title is misleading.

My blue, low, bitter, dismal, somber, sorrow, melancholy mood is back after sending Ezain off at the airport. Without wasting time I drove to my office and keyed-in my students marks and prepared the report for tomorrow's meeting. I was glad to find a few colleagues around at the office. Boleh lah cover perasaan sedih laki dah balik. Chit-chatted with Dr. Zaiton and Madam Farida. Giler ahh colleagues I, public holiday pun gi office. Calon Anugerah Pekerja Cemerlang tahun ini.

Makan tat nanas, sambil tengok screen pc. Oh by the way, I am a fan of pineapple tarts, especially rolled ones, and it is even better if it is from Semenanjung, because I think they make better pineapple tarts. I mean, pineapple tarts made in Semenanjung taste better than the ones I can find here in Sarawak. Maybe I did not look hard enough. My preference would be slightly salted dough with buttery taste. Just a littttlleeee bit salty. Combine that with the sweet taste of pineapple jam. It sure feels heavenly when it melts in your mouth. Eh tadi cakap sedih , tiba2 lupak rasa sedih bila cakap pasal makanan.

Going home after that was even more heartbreaking. The house is empty, and it feels different. AAAAA tolongggg! Sik suka sik suka sik sukaaaaaa! I thought I would find it easier after 7 months.

Today we went over to Stella's house for CNY visit. She is a friend from gym. Thank you for the invitation, Stella!

Our matching shirts. This is after Stella's place - MBO as usual. Our third movie - Contraband. We watched Journey 2 yesterday and Underworld the day before yesterday.

We arrived quite early. Since most shops were closed, what better way to kill time than taking pictures of ourselves with Sacha.

We could not get over this one, Underworld! Love the movie so much.

I am happy if he is happy.

Then we had pizza for dinner, after some groceries shopping.

New Hair Color

This is me on my way to my favorite salon, Hairdo. Awal-awal pagi bangun, and went to Taman Sahabat bawa Ezain jogging. Lepas peloh-peloh jogging, mandi, siap2 then we left at 10 a.m. Dari semalam dah cakap kat Ezain, wooish kena gerak awal sebab takut salon penoh dengan orang yang nak CNY. Time ni jugak la aku sibuk nak dye rambut kan? Tak pe, kita kan 1Malaysia.

Asmah and I were at The Spring last night. I wanted to look for suitable gifts for Aina's twins. I have been to Poppies once and I kind of like the place. Oh noo, dah macam mak-mak ke ni? I plan to have a make-over for my hair this year. I may not change the style nor the length of my hair, but I am thinking of going dark-brown for 2012. Seeing these pretty ladies with such luminous and luscious hair makes me full of envy. Kenapa rambut diaorang tebal sebegini? How to make your hair thicker eh?

HAHAHHAHAHAHHA tajuk macam orang gatal.

I must admit, one of the perks of being a lecturer is that you get to meet different people everyday (students). And I must admit that not every student likes me, nor do I like or have that special bond with every students. Tak kuasa ler aku nak suka semua orang, I am only human, and I can only do my best - students ni sesetengah jenis tu memang tak leh blah. Sesetengah tu, kita rasa ngam dan sesuai. Eh boleh ke macam ni? Boleh, yang penting bila ko start marking atau buat evaluation on your students, ko dapat bezakan apa yang profesional dan apa yang tidak, sama seperti kalau supervisor nak evaluate pekerja lah kan, standard lah tu.

Jadi nak dijadikan cerita, ada certain students batch lepas tu aku kira kamceng jugak lah. And this semester happens to be their final semester, lepas minggu ni memang mungkin tak jumpa lagi except for convocation nanti. Sedih juga la rasa hati sebab dah rasa macam adik sendiri. Tapi takkan nak mendoakan mereka tak grad grad kan? hahaha

So this entry is specially dedicated to Ros Amanina, Rosmunawirah, Nurul Hidayah, Syarifah Suhaila, Nurul Ain, I wish you all the best for your future. Do not worry, I believe in your capabilities. The world is a cruel place, but you will find some of the world's kindest act in it, you will find a job, you will find the man of your dreams, you will miss your undergrad years in Unimas but it is OK, you are welcomed to visit us anytime, but most importantly, you will miss ME. Ngegegegegegege

This took place last week. Baru ingat nak upload dalam blog. Our colleague Aina has returned from her maternity leave, so we sort of organized a get together. Tahniah Aina sebab dapat twin girls, siap un-identical twins tu. Sekali beranak terus dapat 2 kan? Jimat tenaga..

So we had our dinner at Chef At Home, known for its western cuisine. Situated at Taman Hui Sing. Masa bertolak from home it started to drizzle. Dah sudah, kalau cuaca sejuk appetite pun dikuasaduakan.

Ada waktu nya aku rasa sedikit jiwang. Waktu-waktu sejuk macam ini tahap kejiwangan akan digandakan dengan mendengar lagu-lagu yang semestinya tangkap leleh juga. Hari ini adalah salah satu contoh hari jiwang tersebut. One of my must-listen sentimental songs is the one by Christina Perri, A Thousand Years. Aku tak tengok Twilight, aku cuma suka Robert Pattinson tanpa menonton Twilight sebab kami berdua sama-sama muka seputih kertas. The first movie that Robert acted that I have watched is Water for Elephants tak silap. Actually I watched the movie not because of Robert Pattinson, but I am a big fan of Christpoh Waltz. tapi bila tengok movie tu, OK lah, not bad juga la Robert ni.

When I first looked at Bella's wedding dress, my heart skipped a beat. Cantik betul dress itu. One thing that I noticed pasal brides orang puteh ni, their makeup is very minimal and yet they look gorgeous and glowing. Mungkin juga sebab their complexion memang dah cukup cantek dan rosy. So kepada adik adik yang tak kawen lagi, maybe this can be an inspiration to all of you. Pilih makeup artist yang boleh menyerlahkan keayuan anda sebagai seorang bride. Kalau nak pilih MUA, sila teliti k, you do not want to look bad in your wedding pictures. And tell them what type of makeup you want. Ask them what cosmetic brands are they using. Kalau boleh sila buat trial makeup. Since most of them must be owning at least their personal FB account, you may want to look at the works that they have produced as well, kira macam check portfolio diaorang.

Makeup pengantin ni pun simple jer kan. Eh.

Diaorang memang sangat sangat menitikberatkan soal kecantikan rupa paras. This is not surprising judging from the number of Miss Worlds and Miss Universes they have produced. There are other factors influencing this. Having physical beauty is an added advantage to them (and to women in general) as this may help them to come out of poverty by getting jobs as models and celebrities.

I still remember a professor during my undergrad years told our class that he once asked a friend (who is Argentinean , but not that pretty, he said) why do countries like Argentina and Brazil produce so many beauty queens? Her friend explained that beauty competitions are part of their culture. When family members gather for festivities or events, they will grab the chance to host family-level beauty competition. This will continue on to higher levels serving bigger capacity, up to the national level. So imagine the quality of their contestants at national level. Tentulah mereka mampu menghasilkan peserta yang creme de la creme.

Di negara kita keadaan adalah berbeza kerana wanita Melayu (yang pada mata aku sangat cantik dan exotic) tidak dibenarkan untuk menyertai pertandingan seperti ini. Ini menyebabkan peserta kita hanya bergantung kepada certain races sahaja. Bukan nak cakap race lain tak cantik tetapi secara statistik nya, we are already limiting our options.

OK lah, the main purpose for this entry is for me to share some pictures of Kaka (the Brazilian footballer) and his wife with 2 children. Yang menarik nya, he married his childhood sweetheart. Like most Brazilians, they are very, very beautiful sampai aku hairan tengok kecantikkan mereka. The pictures are not mine, so please do not sue me. Haha.

Today I woke up to heavy downpour in Samarahan. It has been raining continuously since last night. When I checked my FB, everyone in Kuching is updating their status about the worsening condition in Kuching at the moment. Major roads are unaccessible to vehicles due to the rise of the water level. I cannot imagine the road traffic, since everyone is either trying to get to work or sending their kids to school.

Yesterday, Kak Tini, Vic and I had lunch at the airport's Old Time. Our campus is very close to the airport, I think it takes only about 10 minutes to the airport if the traffic is clear.

I am wondering if I should consult an eye specialist with regards to this condition since I think I get this almost every month. I am going to keep track of the recurring pattern of this condition - and every time it happens it will only happen to my right eyelid, never on the left.

2012 first entry - Happy New Year!

Happy New Year everybody! 2011 had been kind, in fact it probably is the best year in my life, I got married to a wonderful man! For 2012, I wish nothing but working on a great marriage, and I will do my best to be the one and only, the best wife and woman he has in his life.

So how's your first day of the year? I started mine with a jog / sprint at a park not so close to my neighborhood. It was already bright and sunny when I got there so I only managed to do 1 round. I am liking it more and more now, this run-in-the-park and outdoor thingy. Feeling hungry, I went to a favorite spot for toast and a cup of coffee, not forgetting the delicious Omega soft boiled eggs. Eleh baru 1 round dah lapar, tuiii..

I can hardly remember the last time I stepped out of the house bare-faced, sans makeup. Today, I went out with absolutely no makeup on my face, hehe. That is a record for me because every since I had this Vitiligo thingy, I never ever go out of my room without applying full makeup - makeup base, sunblock, foundation, concealer, powder blablabla since I was 13, but today, I only used sunblock! I guess I am at the stage where I am not bothered by the stares strangers gave me for seeing my white face. After breakfast, I hit the gym and completed 10 km run on the treadmill.

oohh sedap! I think I know how to do this at home - break some eggs in a bowl, add some water, and use the microwave oven to heat it.. but first I need to buy a microwave oven LOL!

In the evening I dolled up a little to attend Asmah's colleagues' wedding. I tagged along :)

Tonight I wanted to look a bit "tanned" so I used Supra Color by Kryolan , 5 shades darker than my white face.

2011 final entry - Topspot Bukit Mata, Serikin and Kopi O Corner

Tolong! Tolong! I nak gi gym for Bodycombat tapi Ezain tak bagi. Dia suruh gi esok sebab diaorang balik Miri esok. Saya protes! Saya protes! OMG I skipped gym for the whole week to keep them company. And while I skipped gym, my eating activity never stopped, in fact it is what I call an eating marathon. Aiyoyoyo I feel embarrassed looking at my own body in the pics. Bulat! Sebulat Doraemon! Mati laaaaa.. :( Tapi tak apa, he promised to bring me to Taman Sahabat later in the evening for a jog. We will see if that happens. Aiyoyoyoyoyo not good, not good!

So while I feel bad about my body size, let's have a look at my some of my dining activity.

Yesterday we had our dinner at Top Spot, Bukit Mata. Now if you are not familiar with Kuching, or are planning to visit Kuching anytime in the future, I recommend this place especially if you are a fan of seafood. This place is located across Pullman Kuching, Hilton and the Inland Revenue building. Every time I am at Top Spot, it is always packed with people from different walks of life. It is also very popular among foreigners and tourists. But not to worry, despite the large crowd, there will always be a spot for everyone. One reason why it is named Top Spot is because of its location. It is situated right on the top floor of a car-park building (6th floor). With the open-air concept and large crowd, do expect the place to be full of noise and people chatting and laughing while having dinner.

Second dish - Siakap (snapper or sea bass) 3 rasa. Initially ordered Siakap Mango but they ran out of mango!

After dinner, we went home with stuffed tummy and a bitter heart (for my case sebab makan tak ingat dunia). My MIL wanted to go to Serikin the next day so we slept early. In the morning, we started our journey to Serikin at 7 a.m. Serikin (Malaysia-Indonesia border) is a place where you can find a stretch of stalls selling telekung, prayer mats, cooking utensils, local fruits, clothes, Indonesian batek, kerepek, mattresses, and a little bit of everything. You can even find curtains being sold here at a cheap price and you may bargain for a much lower price if you wish.

Before our journey began, I layered my face and body with sun block, mind you, the sun can be very mean. It is always hot , scorching hot at Serikin despite the rainy season. Umbrella is a must-carry item as well.

Upon arrival. We parked our car at this piece of private land, and the parking fee is RM2 per entry.

Date Night

We started our Thursday morning with some gardening work. Mencangkul belakang rumah. We managed to make our backyard neater, and killed the bushes. After that we planted some papaya seeds in the hope that we are able to have our very own papaya trees by 2012. We will see if we have green fingers.

Just like the previous week, it was rainy yesterday. My God, it rained almost every subsequent hour yesterday! We made a plan to watch Mission Impossible 4 later in the evening. It was just the two of us, my parents in law are not into movies.

Chak! Note to self: Must bring shawl or pashmina along when watching movies again the next time, it was very useful - we used this one as a blanket! The cinema was sooo cooooolllddddd!

While waiting for our movie to start, we went to look for shoes for Ezain.

We ended up not buying any because the one he wanted was the last pair available and it was used for display already. We do not buy anything that has been used by others as samples right?

Mission Impossible 4 was OK - not bad! A must watch if you like Tom Cruise or Suri - to support his dad's work so he can keep on buying super expensive clothes for Suri hehe. Till next entry - chiow!

Hai..apa khabar kitak orang tek? Gago kerja ka? Kamek cuti ari tok koh.. apa ngenang mak bapak mentua ada di Kuching, sik nyaman juak ati kita di opis, mok sik mok mintak juak cuti. Hehe, padah jak malas turun kerja ujung tahun kedak tok, mala jak ari ujan.

Tok cerita ari marek, adalah kamek tek makey baju kurung cotton kaler kunin cair, bunga-bunga sedang sedang, sik juak kecik , sik juak besar bunga nya. Ya lah tek, maka selalu dah makey baju ya tapi marek lah antap gilak, sampey 5 orang colleague tek muji, kacak baju ya padah sidak. Kamek apa lagik, maklom lah kita tok pantang dipuji, lalu ngeluar camera baru nyenap (root word : snap) gambar k upload dalam belog. Nang ngegeh. Rindok ati bah. Kedong kerja di opis tek udah siap, carry mark minggu lepas udah diupload dalam Morpheus, sik cukup ya anta gik k upload dalam Buletin Board, sik cukup juak tek ditampal gik di cermin opis. Mun madah sik tauk markah dah keluar sik juak tauk, mok diketok kali palak.

OK lah, sik lah mok berloyar panjang gilak. Tangga jak kitak gambar di debah tok k. Eboh jeles k! HEHEHE

Untuk mendapatkan kulit halus seperti ini (YA RABBI PERASAN PEMPUAN TOK), sila lah amalkan meminum sesudu besar Minyak Zaitun (Extra Virgin Olive Oil) dua kali sehari. Sekali bila bangun tido, sekali sebelum masuk tido. Dengar kata Sophia Loren dan Selena Gomez nang ngamal petua tok. Walaupun rasa pelik, telan jak k, ingat Beauty is Pain.

Hello everybody. My name is Gegirl - well, that is the name given by my owner. I was born on an auspicious date - 11.11. 2011. I was born to a beautiful mother, Elizabeth who came all the way from Long Lapok, some 3-hours drive from Miri. I heard the road is badddd and bumpy. That is where my Master Hema is currently working, she is a teacher you see, and a pretty one too.

I was not the only kitty my mother gave birth to on that very special date, I have 2 other brothers. However, my brothers did not make it to their first month due to some illness. When they were gone, I felt so lonely.

I think about them all the time. I miss them so much but I know they are at a much better place now. I hope to meet them both one day, and when I do I will wrestle and bite and play with them all day long, that is how much I want to be with them.

There is this fair-skinned (she is literally white) and weird looking lady with a pink camera today. She seems very excited about me and her brand new camera which she got as a Christmas present from her husband. She is taking pictures of me all the time now. I think I remember who she is. On the day I was born, she was the first human I saw because she could not stop staring at my mother during delivery. She is my Master Hema's younger sister, Master Hana. Unlike Master Hema, Master Hana is very short hehe.

This Master Hana keeps on saying that I look like Merlin. Merlin who?

I told myself over and over again not to speak or write directly about work related problems in this blog for fear that it could be misunderstood or manipulated by people. I know that my colleagues and students are my silent readers. However I could not deny the fact that there are many, many times when I wished that I am still working in the hotel industry back in my hometown. If not for the small salary I think I would have stayed longer. Neither am I saying that I hate my current job, I love it, but there are certain things that I wish could be done better. Grass is always greener on the other side, they say, but then again nothing is ever as it seems.

Back then I would always feel happy working at such a lovely place by the beach, meeting wonderful people, socializing with interesting and motivating colleagues. Salary may be small but there are other intrinsic rewards that you get. Things are very much different now and when you work in an academic institution, the environment is totally different, however there are endless opportunities to gain knowledge and to educate the younger generation, to help produce a better society, to find ground-breaking research findings and to make the world a better place to live in. There are times when I feel like I have had enough but then again I am not going to give up so soon. I have my own target and ambitions to achieve.

Perhaps today is just one of those days when I feel frustrated by people who would bend and break all the rules just to be well-liked by others. Now that I have a problem. I don't care if people hate or dislike me, I care more about doing the right things. I am not here to be popular, I am here to get things done according to the rules you have laid out. But if YOU told me to just close my eyes and not take actions, I must admit that it was, and still is, heartbreaking. And not to mention that I may not be looking at you the same way again.

I guess we all have some ups and downs with our job, which makes it all more interesting.

In Loving Memories : My Pink Camera

I misplaced my pink Sony Cyber-Shot compact camera during my recent trip to KL. I am still mourning over the loss. I have taken great, memorable pictures and moments significant in my life with it, not to mention that particular camera was with me for almost 4 years, always ready in my handbag for some action and vanity purposes.

Kak Hema's big day.

Last Friday night, we witnessed a beautiful ceremony that marked a change in our beloved eldest sister's status. For 28 years of my life, I never thought that one day I will be sharing my sister to a man. We are very close as siblings and seeing her so happy brought tears to our eyes - not because we are sad but we are so happy to see her happy.

I speak for the 3 of us and I believe Nazura and Izzaty would agree with me too, that Kak Hema is a very beautiful, caring and responsible eldest sister anyone could wish for. She is what a big sister should be, she is tall, she is beautiful, she cooks, she has flawless skin, straightest , shiniest hair and the good qualities in her does not seem to end. I still remember what it was like growing up together. There will always be people (both men and women) whose heads turned just to get a second look when my sister entered a room, or walked pass them. She already had that head-turning effect since she was barely 12 years old.

To Kak Hema as we fondly address her, I pray for your happiness, and may both of you be granted with good health, good fortune and cute children. To Zul, you know we will all be watching you! You better take great care of our sister!

Oh noooo.. it is that time of the year again when we all need to stop doing what we are doing and do some thinking instead because at one point or another you will be asked on your New Year Resolution . Alright, for 2012 my new year resolution would be:

1) to lose some weight. Say, 5 kilograms. (same as last year)
2) spend less, save more :(
3) please refer to Resolution Number 2.
4) did I say I need to save more and spend less? T_______________________T
5) to finish up my beauty supplies (my countless bottles of lotion, the different shades of pink blusher that I have in my possession, my different shades of pink lipsticks to match my different mood for different shades of pink lipsticks, my never been worn blouses) T_____________________________T
6) make more money and spend less? I need help in this department.
7) secure a place for my Phd study
8) try not to have a baby yet until ~~he gets a promotion or a big raise in his salary~~ we are both financially sound.
9) buy a house? This is very unlikely.
10) not to give in to the temptation of buying a new car, or a new Blackberry, or getting myself an Ipad2, or changing my whole skin care range to SK11. Heh.

Received a wake up call from Ezain at 7 a.m., he was waiting for his cab to the airport. He was in Terengganu for almost a week attending a course. I never thought that my marriage will be one of a long distance marriage. I am patiently waiting for our plans to fall in place, InsyaAllah. Until that time becomes a reality, I will be waiting.

I had a talk with my mother over the phone ten minutes ago, and conversations with my Mak would normally make me smile. Tonight's little talk is no exception.

Mak : Once you are Miri, I need you to accompany me to visit MaxFactor, I want to get that cream , the sticky cream you put on your face, what do you call it....foundation? I used to swear by this brand when I was your age.

Me : Ok, Mak, will surely choose the right shade for you.

Others are inspired by celebrities and beauty queens when it comes to choosing their beauty idol. Mine is my very own mother. I grew up watching her put on her face powder, lipstick and her ultimate must-have --black eyeliner. At that time, my mother did not have the luxury to buy branded cosmetics because she sacrificed so that we could have decent food on the table, gas for the car, pocket money for school, and more importantly half of our dad's salary was used for paying tuition fees. My parents believed in getting the best education for all four of us. We did not get to buy new clothes every month. I used my sister's textbooks since we are only a year apart. My mother would have made a great Finance Minister.

Today all her sacrifices are paid off. We may not be rich, but I can afford to buy her facial care , and well-known cosmetics. I pray I can do this for much longer.

Kadang-kadang rasa pelik dengan sesetengah kawan. Bila kita diperlukan, they will look for you, and ask for information, korek-korek rahsia, tanya itu ini. You only hear from them when they need something from you, after getting what they want, they vanish until a time in the future when you hear from them again, when they need something else from you. Tapi cuba tanya dia balik, dia buat tak tahu and tak jawap soalan kita. Tak apa lah. I am happy I am not you. And you know what, I am just glad that even if you do not want to admit it, I know you secretly want to be like me! I will be your friend still, no worries.

It all started the night I was proctoring my students' mid-term exam. My stomach was growling and grumbling like nobody's business. When I got home, my in-and-out visit to the bathroom began, right till last night. When I googled for information about this condition, a lot of people who recently have had their wisdom tooth removed faced the same problem too. Apparently I am allergic to the prescribed antibiotics given by my dentist, it is called Amoxicillin. Last night was the worst, I could barely breathe and I felt like my chest was very heavy. Reading from the internet, I got to the part where patients could die as a result of this allergy. I stopped reading right there and then and finally dozed off. Will go back to my dentist this morning and see what she can do for me. Things are not looking good for me because I think I started to get infections on my gum.

And I have yet started packing for my balik kampung trip this evening.

Wisdom Tooth Extraction & Current Addiction

So I finally had it done yesterday after my morning class. I could take it no more. The pain was unbearable, and the aftermath pain is also not to my tolerance. But I cannot be a baby and whine about it all day, now can I? I can hardly eat anything solid, I had to drive to the airport for the nearest McD just to have their chicken porridge. Other than that I am on liquid diet. Ribena, Milo and plain water. Antibiotics and painkillers too. Boohoo. I no longer have wisdom tooth, so does that make me less wise? :(

But the pain is significantly reduced by my current obsession. Rasa macam zaman remaja dolok indah, ingga aku.

A Celebration of Love

Waseh tajuk hari ini, yup, I attended a wedding reception of a colleague this morning. The theme for their reception was as stated above: A Celebration of Love (Majlis Meraikan Cinta). Apa macam, romantik kan bunyi nya. It was held at the new Dewan Baitulmal Kuching. It is a big hall and since it is new, it is very clean and has a nice ambience. Would highly recommend people in Kuching to consider this place for wedding reception venue. One interesting thing about Dina and Gard's reception is that they have family members who can really sing. They could have passed as professional singers. It must be in their genes or something. We were really amazed by their powerful voices, dari makcik ke pakcik sehinggalah budak budak. Anak dara apa lagi. Dina has an amazing voice too, I still remember Dina singing for our group during our Induction course, her voice was really like Duffy's. I think she covered Duffy's song better than the original singer.

Pada hari Khamis yang lepas, saya telah berangkat ke Kuala Lumpur bersama teman rapat di pejabat, siapa lagi kalau bukan Vic. Seperti yang anda sedia maklum, tujuan pemergian kami di saat-saat kesibukan Unimas untuk melangsungkan Majlis Konvokesyen adalah satu perkara yang tidak dapat dielakkan. Tiket belon sudah dibeli berbulan-bulan dahulu (tetapi persediaan dilakukan kurang 2 minggu sebelum tarikh peperiksaan, para pelajar jangan tiru macam saya) dan yuran peperiksaan juga sudah dilangsaikan (hutang kredit kad sahaja masih belum langsai). Kami pun terbang dengan perasaan yang bercampur baur memandang persiapan yang dilakukan adalah sangat minimal (saya bercakap bagi pihak saya, mungkin di pihak Vic berbeza).

Nyata sekali tahap stress adalah amat tinggi sehinggakan tiada satu pun gambar diambil semasa berlangsungnya GRE. Wah ini sangat berbeza memandangkan saya suka syiok sendiri bergambar. Yang ada hanyalah gambar pada keesokkan hari nya semasa menanti ujian TOEFL berjalan. Oh, sekiranya anda mesti tahu, GRE yang mempunyai 6 seksyen dan berlangsung selama 4 jam 30 minit yang saya lalui merupakan 4 jam 30 minit yang paling getir dalam hidup saya.

Peluang keemasan ini juga saya khususkan untuk bertemu dengan adik saya yang telah membanggakan keluarga dengan menjadi doktor pertama dalam sejarah keluarga kami. Maafkan saya kalau bunyi agak riak. Bukan setiap hari adik kita jadi doktor kan?

He left me again today early in the morning so he could arrive safely before he starts working tomorrow. Every time he leaves me all alone here, he took pieces of my heart that left me feeling empty and incomplete. To make up with what I felt I straight away head to the gym for a great work out session. I keep on telling myself over and over again, if God has arranged this jodoh for me, than I believe that He knows what is best for me. Until we meet again, I will always have our memories and time spent together on repeat mode in my head.

I swear this place was once the most happening cinema in Kuching before MBO existed. But now, the state of this cinema is pathetic. I could not help but wonder, don't they ever want to change and fight?

Welcoming a New Family Member

Ezain is in Kuching! For a good whole week! Yesterday we went out for the long anticipated date. Let me tell you how our Sunday went.

At 11 a.m. (after having breakfast at home which consisted of Nasi Lemak and kuih-muih) we left the house and began hunting for a place for car wash. We went all the way to Satok :)

Our major plan for Sunday was to visit a cousin of mine at 3 p.m., who had recently gave birth to a baby girl. Before we went to the car wash, we stopped by Anakku to get baby Amanda her gifts. With more than 2 hours to go, we decided to have our second breakfast / brunch at Old Town at The Hills.

I love this weird-shaped shirt. I love any weird shirts! Haha

My husband is a retard. Activity wajib dengan Ezain. Makan Makan Makan!

Shortly after our brunch, we went to Toys R Us, OMG ! I am a child once more! So many toys, so many beautiful pink stuffs that I never had growing up.

Will get one of these in the future for our child. Read on the box : Ants not included.

Then we visited the bookstore called The Times. Not looking for any book in particular, just browsing the interesting stuff they have.

Soon after that, we checked the time and woohoo it was already 2.30 p.m.. So off we go!

We met up with Kak Nandy at a Shell station somewhere in Gita, and.....

After that, we headed to The Spring (yes, in Kuching we name our shopping malls after the season and environment - The Spring, The Hills, and soon to be opened The Summer near Unimas, don't ask me why) to watch 2 movies back-to-back "Killer Elite" and "The Three Musketeers". Both very good, both recommended.

My extraordinary Saturday

Today, as promised I brought 2 of my students (Ros and Nina) over to my place. We had planned for this activity for quite some time but I had to postpone it for a couple of times due to my busy and tight schedule *ehem*. So at 10.40 a.m. I picked them up from their house. Our first destination was to go to Boulevard Hypermarket so we can get our groceries done. Little did we know that the left rear tyre of my Kancil was punctured! Thank God we stopped by at Petronas station and that was when my students realized that we had a situation. Since all of us are girls, none of us know exactly how to get the tyre changed. Don't get me wrong, we do know how to do it in our head but none of us had done it before. Ros asked for help from an uncle who was on duty at the station. We could not thank him enough for his help. I wanted to give him some money as a token of appreciation but he refused to accept it. Pakcik, cuma Allah jak dapat membalas jasa pakcik tadik. Terima kasih banyak banyak pakcik, eboh jerak k.

In the middle of the cooking activity, we thought we could smell faint odor of leaking gas. So I did the gas-leak test using soap and water. Clear enough, there is a problem with the gas regulator. Macam-macam hal kan. We headed to Parkson after Maghrib to get a new gas regulator.

I got this from Facebook. I am still crying over this miracle. Ya Allah, kalau Kau kurniakan aku anak, jadikan lah anak aku seorang doktor yang mampu menyelamatkan nyawa. Amin.

A picture began circulating in November. It should be "The Picture of the Year," or perhaps, "Picture of the Decade." It won't be. In fact, unless you obtained a copy of the U.S. paper which published it, you probably would never have seen it.

The picture is that of a 21-week-old unborn baby named Samuel Alexander Armas, who is being operated on by surgeon named Joseph Bruner. The baby was diagnosed with spina bifida and would not survive if removed from his mother's womb. Little Samuel's mother, Julie Armas, is an obstetrics nurse in Atlanta. She knew of Dr. Bruner's remarkable surgical procedure. Practicing at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, he performs these special operations while the baby is still in the womb.

During the procedure, the doctor removes the uterus via C-section and makes a small incision to operate on the baby. As Dr. Bruner completed the surgery on Samuel, the little guy reached his tiny, but fully developed hand through the incision and firmly grasped the surgeon's finger. Dr. Bruner was reported as saying that when his finger was grasped, it was the most emotional moment of his life, and that for an instant during the procedure he was just frozen, totally immobile.

The photograph captures this amazing event with perfect clarity. The editors titled the picture, "Hand of Hope." The text explaining the picture begins, "The tiny hand of 21-week-old fetus Samuel Alexander Armas emerges from the mother's uterus to grasp the finger of Dr. Joseph Bruner as if thanking the doctor for the gift of life."

Little Samuel's mother said they "wept for days" when they saw the picture. She said, "The photo reminds us pregnancy isn't about disability or an illness, it's about a little person" Samuel was born in perfect health, the operation 100 percent successful. Now see the actual picture, and it is awesome...incredible....and hey, pass it on! The world needs to see this one!

Yesterday we attended a small ramah-tamah event specially for Unimas Alumni, (Unimas Chapter). I believe a lot of Unimas employees, especially the officers are alumni of Unimas. I had a class prior to the function so I arrived late and the food was almost gone. Poor Vic who waited for me.

I am currently facing a situation at work that is causing a discomfort to me. It is a very sensitive issue and I know I should not write explicit information about it here for fear that that person may read this blog. I hope my patience about this matter will be deepened and that I will not create a scene as my patience is thinning. Perhaps I should be more understanding and be more considerate of people's responsibilities towards their family members. I should imagine myself in their shoes and understand their action. However, I am a firm believer that work and family should, to a certain extend, not be mixed. That is what we call professionalism. I hope that as the time passes by, I will be able to close my eyes and not hear the snores anymore. Forgive me, God, I know I should work harder on my patience.

Gym buddies

I do not have much update for my blog. I spent my weekend visiting Eid open houses and eat eat eat eat eat. Sigh. So today I spend hours at the gym hoping that I will be able to burn off the calories I swallowed from yesterday's activities. I don't think I have introduced you to another gym buddy of mine (apart from Nora). She is Aisyah. Aisyah is one of the kindest lady I have ever met. She is soooooooooo nice and really really humble.

Singapore Getaway Part 3

So I realized that I have not finished my trilogy entry on my Singapore trip. Haha Singapore je pun, Hana bukan Scandinavia! Kalau I pergi Scandinavia I buat 10 entry!

Since we were already at USS quite early, I started to feel tired and dizzy after that roller coaster ride Ezain made me do with him. The one at The Mummy Return, yup, the indoor roller coaster. As usual, I treated my roller coster ride with complete silence. I did not scream, I closed my eyes and waited for the agony to be over.

We had lunch at Mel's Drive in, it is halal and taste better than McD.

We found a halal restaurant just 1 block away from our hotel on the last night we were there. This is my Nasi Briyani.

Borneo Semenggoh Wildlife Centre, Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia.

On Saturday, Ezain and I woke up very early in the morning to get ready for our trip to Semenggoh Wildlife Centre. It is situated at 10th Mile, Kuching. It is not that far away from where we live since we are staying at Kota Samarahan, but from Kuching it will be some 25 kilometers away from the city centre. I found out that a lot of born and raised local Kuchingites have not even set foot at this wonderful place, now that is a shame. As an effort to rescue captivated animals, Sarawak government has opened up this centre as a place to ensure the safety of endangered species. This place is well-known for its orangutan. We were informed that there are currently 26 orangutans living in the natural forest of this centre.

If you think that this place is a zoo, then you are greatly mistaken. The concept that is being practiced here is that the animals would live as they would in the jungle hence, you will not be able to touch and feed the orangutans. We made it a point to arrive before the feeding time, which is from 9.00 a.m. until 10.00 a.m. Now, even if you have arrived during the feeding time, there is no guarantee that the orangutans will be coming to the feeding area. It all depends on the orangutans. If they have sufficient food in the jungle, they might not turn up. When food is scarce, they will return to the feeding area for some fruits. We were very lucky that day because about 10 orangutans were around. I will let the pictures below speak for themselves.

The entrance fee is RM3.00 for adults. If you are planning to visit Kuching, I would highly recommend this visit in your agenda. Tripods and flash photography are not allowed as the orangutans may view them as weapons.

How are you? Just to let you know that ever since you made that announcement to our 1st year students about the usage of staff's toilet, I notice that our toilet now (Ladies, level 2) is not as clean and as comfortable as it used to be. I know I am not happy with this. I hope the rule on the staff toilet will be taken back. Or you can always allow them to use level 3 toilets (your toilet). Hope that I do not sound too harsh but I just want you to know that I am not happy.
